EKO HOT BLOG reports that Jota’s wife, family members, Liverpool teammates, and key football figures attended the funeral at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, near Porto. Liverpool manager Arne Slot and club captain Virgil van Dijk were among the mourners, alongside former Wolves teammate Joao Moutinho and Portugal internationals Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias.
Jota, 27, and his brother died when their Lamborghini burst into flames after a suspected tyre blowout around 12:40 a.m. on Thursday. The pair had been travelling in Spain, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. Jota had married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, just 11 days before the accident. He is survived by his wife and their three children.
During the funeral, the coffins of both brothers were carried into the church amid the sound of tolling bells as mourners, visibly emotional, followed behind. Some players brought football shirt-shaped wreaths to honour the late footballer.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez described the day as heartbreaking, saying, “We are Portugal, and it was essential for us to be together with Andre Silva and Diogo Jota. Their spirit will remain with us forever.”
Ruben Neves, who served as one of the pallbearers, flew in from Florida shortly after playing in the Club World Cup.
Jota’s teammate Bernardo Silva shared a tearful tribute, saying, “Jota was more than a footballer. His passion, his spirit, and his friendship will stay with us forever.”
The funeral procession ended with the coffins carried to the cemetery next to the church.
