Gender-Based Violence: UNFPA Advocates Inclusion In Schools Curriculum

The United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA says Authorities in Education Sector have major roles to play in tackling the menace of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, SGBV among School Children in the Country.

The UNFPA Programmes Coordinator in northern Nigeria Ms. Mariama Darboe Stated this during a one-day Capacity Building Session for Female students on sexual and Gender-Based violence Organised by Beulah Future Leaders Foundation, at Government Secondary School, GSS Television, Kaduna State- Nigeria.

Mariama Darboe explained that the event which was Organized for 36 selected Female School Children was part of efforts to equip them with knowledge on SGBV and ways to prevent and combat the menace in the Society.

The UNFPA Programmes coordinator in northern Nigeria pointed out that School Authorities could be actively involved in the fight against the scourge by including SGBV in the country’s education curriculum as part of the Guardiance and Counseling unit to guard students from becoming victims of abuse and molestation.

She said during the workshop, they were taught the meaning of SGBV, Child marriage, molestation, Female genital mutilation, Emotional and Psychological violence as well as Schools related abuse and violence among others.

Mariama who says SGBV is any violence directed at an individual base on his or her sex or gender identity, urges the students to be conscious of their bodies and be courageous to report to their school Authorities any form of molestation or abuse for swift action and intervention.

Earlier in her keynote address, Co-Founder of Beulah Future Leaders Foundation Ms. Koni Wendy Bakka expressed the determination of the UNFPA Volunteers toward ensuring that the awareness campaign on sexual and Gender-Based violence reaches all the nooks and crannies of the state for the menace to be reduced to the barest minimum in the state and the country in general.
