The government of Ghana has summoned South Africa’s diplomatic representative following a series of reported xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the move comes after viral videos showed migrants facing harassment in parts of South Africa, raising concerns over the safety of foreign residents.

According to a statement from Ghana’s Foreign Ministry, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa cited a recent case in KwaZulu-Natal where a Ghanaian with legal residency was confronted and told to leave the country and “fix his country.”

The ministry warned of rising tensions, noting that foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, have been advised to remain indoors for their safety in affected areas.
During a meeting with South Africa’s acting High Commissioner, Thando Dalamba, Ablakwa expressed concern over the treatment of law-abiding migrants.
He stressed that such actions contradict the spirit of African unity, recalling Ghana’s historic support for South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle.
South Africa, Africa’s most industrialised economy, has long attracted migrants from across the continent, both documented and undocumented.

However, with unemployment exceeding 30 percent, the country has witnessed recurring waves of anti-immigrant protests, sometimes escalating into violence.
Official figures from 2022 indicate that about 2.4 million foreign-born individuals live in South Africa, accounting for roughly four percent of the population.
