The bodies of the two deceased gang members have since been deposited at a local mortuary for identification, preservation, and autopsy procedures.
According to an official security statement released by the Ghana Police Service on its official communication channels, law enforcement agencies acted on actionable intelligence gathered at approximately 10:45 am on Wednesday, August 13, 2026.
The intelligence report indicated that a sophisticated armed robbery gang was making final operational preparations to simultaneously invade three prominent commercial banking facilities in the Labone area: GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank.
Upon receiving the high-level security intelligence, a specialized tactical response unit was immediately mobilized and deployed to the targeted banking hub in Labone.
Upon arrival at the scene, tactical officers identified members of the criminal syndicate sitting inside two operational vehicles that were strategically parked in close proximity to the targeted financial facilities.
Realizing that security forces had surrounded the location, one of the gang’s vehicles sped off at high speed in an aggressive bid to break through the police perimeter and escape arrest.
Tactical police units immediately gave hot pursuit, cutting off the fleeing vehicle and apprehending Augustine Okechuku Maazi, while another suspect inside the vehicle managed to escape into the surrounding area on foot.
At the same time, the remaining members of the syndicate inside the second getaway vehicle attempted a desperate exit by opening gunfire on approaching police officers.
The law enforcement team responded with targeted, decisive firepower, resulting in an intense gun battle that fatally wounded two members of the armed gang at the scene.
Following the total suppression of the threat, police operatives recovered two operational vehicles used by the syndicate, a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson bearing registration number GS 7915-17, as well as a blow pistol and other tactical items.
The Ghana Police Service commended the rapid response team for their bravery, professional execution, and commitment to maintaining public safety.
The police high command assured members of the public that the suspect in custody is cooperating with homicide and armed robbery investigators to unmask and track down remaining members of the criminal syndicate, while reiterating its appeal for citizens to continuously provide timely and credible information to help eliminate violent crime across the nation.
