Governor Otti Begins Payment of N18bn Salary Arrears Owed to Abia Workers
Fulfilling his campaign promises, Abia State Governor Alex Otti has initiated the payment of salary arrears owed to academic workers by previous administrations.
According to an official source close to the state Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the affected workers include staff from Abia State University, Abia State Polytechnic, Abia State College of Education (Technical Arochukwu), Abia State Teaching Hospital, and the Health Management Board in Umuahia.
EKO HOT BLOG reports other institutions benefiting from the payments include the College of Health Sciences, Aba, the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, and the Secondary Education Management Board, among others.

In a statement on Saturday, Kanu revealed, “The office of the Accountant General has commenced payment of the arrears to all verified workers, totaling N17,629,767,342.09.”

The state government announced that the arrears would be paid through a 12-month amortization plan, with the first installment already disbursed. This structured approach aims to prevent disruptions to other areas of governance due to limited financial resources.
“This action by the Dr. Alex Otti administration reaffirms its commitment to prioritizing the welfare of Abia State civil servants,” the Commissioner added.

Supporting this information, Ukoha Njoku, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, stated that the first tranche of payments to settle the N18 billion salary arrears has already been made.
He noted that the governor has allocated N1.5 billion monthly to clear the outstanding payments over the next 12 months. Governor Otti, Njoku added, is more focused on the overwhelming joy of the workers than on the grievances of those who previously withheld their rightful entitlements.
