Group Asks Buhari To Probe NSA, Service Chiefs Over Missing Arms Funds

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has demanded the investigation of former service chiefs over allegation of arms fund misappropriation and embezzlement levelled against them by National Security Adviser, (NSA), General Babagana Monguno (rtd).
Monguno in an interview with the BBC Hausa had said that there was nothing on ground to show that the money earmarked for procurement of arms was used for that purpose.
Monguno revelation was greeted with outrage on social media, with many Nigerians saying the development had further reinforced their assertion of ingrained and widespread corruption in the Buhari government.
Following the reaction that followed his disclosure, the office of the NSA subsequently issued a statement, saying Monguno was quoted out of context.
It added that Monguno did not say that funds meant for arms procurement were missing under the ex-service chiefs as reported or transcribed by some media outlets.
Reacting, SERAP in a statement by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, called on president Muhammadu Buhari to order an investigation in the matter, adding that the NSA’s denial should not be the end of the issue.
Oluwadare asserts that investigation of the allegations and prosecution of those found guilty will enhance public trust and instil confidence in the citizens.
“Any allegations of corruption in the spending of public fund must be promptly, thoroughly, and transparently investigated.
“Suspected perpetrators should equally be brought to book if there is relevant admissible evidence.
“Also, any missing public funds must be fully recovered and returned to the treasury.
“Finally, investigating and prosecuting the allegations would help Nigerians know if the funds meant to defend the country and for purchase of arms to empower Nigerian soldiers have been transparently and accountably spent,” the statement said.
