Suspected gunmen have reportedly kidnapped Fabian Ihekweme, a former Commissioner for Foreign Affairs in Imo State, sparking fresh concerns over rising insecurity in the region.
The abduction took place on Wednesday afternoon at Ihekweme’s residence. In a viral video circulating online, a woman identifying herself as his wife made a tearful plea for his release.

“They first took my husband’s driver to my house and made him call my husband. When he came out, they picked him up,” she said. “I have no ties to Imo politics and no idea why they are trailing my family. Please, Ndi Imo, help me.”
Ihekweme served as commissioner from 2020 to 2022 under Governor Hope Uzodimma before defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He recently accused the governor of failing to appreciate his efforts in Uzodimma’s reelection campaign.
When contacted, Imo police spokesperson Henry Okoye said the command had not yet received any official report on the abduction.
