He made the announcement in a letter addressed to his colleagues on Friday.
Jeffries promised his colleagues that he would empower and protect them — and expand their ranks.
“Our top non-governmental priority, for the sake of the American people, must be retaking the majority in November 2024,” the current chair of the Democratic caucus wrote.
Jeffries also praised the past leadership but said “more must be done to combat inflation, defend our democracy, secure reproductive freedom, welcome new Americans, promote equal protection under the law and improve public safety throughout this country.”
He wrote that “we must chart a return to regular order.” He also said that in “dangerous times,” Congress must focus on passing bills to “combat crime” for Americans and “significantly enhance the security of all Members and their families.”
The New York rep is expected to win the race after Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn quickly backed him after announcing they would step down from their leadership posts.
The Speaker blessed the new trio of leaders expected to succeed them — Jeffries, Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark and California Rep. Peter Aguilar — in a statement on Friday.
“A new day is dawning — and I am confident that these new leaders will capably lead our Caucus and the Congress,” Pelosi said.
