Addressing the gathering at Yaya Abatan, Ogba, Lagos, Dr. Hamzat stated that every Nigerian, whether in government or not, has a vital role to play in the development of the country and curbing social vices. “All of us in our different spheres, all have roles to play, we all have to contribute, and the government, of course, has a bigger role to ensure that the comfort and peaceful existence of everybody is not jeopardized,” he said.

The Deputy Governor emphasized that the government alone cannot do everything, hence the need for all hands to be on deck and ready to play their roles in their different spaces. He urged Nigerians to join hands with the government to make the country a better place to live for all.

Commenting on the topic of the lecture, Dr. Hamzat charged parents to take good care of their children, train them to be obedient and good citizens, shun all forms of social vices, and monitor their movements, deeds, and associations.

Earlier, the President of the Ifako/Ijaye Muslim Community, Alhaji Lateef Ayodeji Sumonu, noted that Ramadan is a period of reflection, spiritual growth, and a time for Muslims to renew their faith, strengthen their bonds with Allah, and seek forgiveness. He added that it is also a time of compassion, generosity, and selflessness.

Sumonu spoke on the significant role played by the late Oba Alhaji Muftau Olatunji Hamzat in the development of the community, describing him as a beacon of hope, a champion of unity, and a leader committed to serving others, irrespective of their background and beliefs.

In his lecture titled “Roles and Responsibilities of Leaders and Followers in Correcting Societal Vices,” Sheikh Kamarudeen Adebisi Yesir emphasized that every citizen has a role to play in the development of the nation, not just the leaders. He urged citizens to cooperate with the government in ensuring peace and growth in the country.

“All we seek in the country is our rights, forgetting that we all also have roles and responsibilities to play in making our nation peaceful and great,” Sheikh Yesir stated. He advised Nigerians to shun societal vices and corruption, stressing that the country would be a better place for all to live if this is done.

The guest lecturer called on clerics to use their teachings and sermons to reframe the citizens’ mindset, noting that surrendering everything to Allah, as obliged in the Holy Quran, is crucial for everyone to be responsible for the country’s development.
