EKO HOT BLOG reports that the lawmakers issued a formal notice to both officials, citing constitutional provisions that empower the legislature to take such action.
According to the Assembly, the move aligns with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended), which outlines the procedures for removing a sitting governor or deputy over allegations of gross misconduct. The lawmakers maintained that their decision was based on legal grounds and the need to uphold legislative responsibilities.
“In compliance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and other extant laws, we the undersigned members of the Rivers State House of Assembly hereby forward to you a Notice of Gross Misconduct by the Deputy Governor of Rivers State in the performance of the functions of her office,” the notice read in part.
The impeachment notice has raised political tensions in the oil-rich state, signaling a potential move to unseat both Governor Fubara and his deputy. The development comes just days after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, declared that nothing would happen if the lawmakers impeached Fubara.
