- 7 Early Signs Your Heart May Not Be Working Properly
- Breathlessness and unusual fatigue should not always be dismissed.
- Severe chest pain or breathing difficulty requires urgent medical attention.
Heart problems do not always begin with severe chest pain. Sometimes, the body shows warning signs that are easy to dismiss. Here are seven symptoms you should pay attention to.
1. Shortness of Breath
Becoming unusually breathless during normal activities or while resting can sometimes indicate that the heart is struggling to pump blood effectively.
2. Unusual Fatigue
Feeling extremely tired despite getting enough rest may be linked to reduced blood flow. Persistent or unexplained fatigue should be checked by a healthcare professional.
3. Chest Discomfort
Pressure, tightness, squeezing or discomfort in the chest can be a warning sign of a heart problem. If it is severe or occurs with other symptoms, seek urgent medical care.
4. Swollen Legs and Ankles
Swelling in the feet, ankles or legs can occur when the heart is not circulating blood efficiently, causing fluid to build up in the lower body.
5. Irregular Heartbeat
A racing, fluttering or irregular heartbeat may indicate an abnormal heart rhythm. Frequent or severe episodes should not be ignored.
6. Dizziness or Fainting
Feeling dizzy or fainting without an obvious reason can sometimes occur when the heart is unable to maintain adequate blood flow to the brain.
7. Pain in the Arm, Back or Jaw
Heart related discomfort can sometimes spread beyond the chest to the arm, shoulder, back, neck or jaw. This can be particularly important when accompanied by chest discomfort or breathlessness.

Severe chest pain, serious difficulty breathing, fainting or sudden worsening symptoms require urgent medical attention.
