EKO HOT BLOG reports that Rotimi, standing in for the absent Committee Chair, Boma Goodhead, was delivering the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Committee’s report when his comment sparked the debate.
He stated, “My name is Akin Rotimi Jr. I represent the people of Ekiti North, comprising Ikole and Oye Local Governments. Mr. Speaker, I am from Ekiti State, the first state whose National Assembly Caucus has unanimously endorsed the tax bills.”
The statement quickly ignited uproar among lawmakers, with many vocally opposing the comment and chanting, “No, No, No!”
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas stepped in to calm the situation, instructing Rotimi to stay on topic. “Restrict yourself to the subject matter. We are not discussing tax bills, as this is a very controversial issue. On your behalf, I withdraw the statement,” the Speaker said.
Despite Rotimi’s apology and retraction of the statement, the House remained in turmoil. Lawmakers, dissatisfied with the situation, called for him to step down from presenting the report entirely, as tensions continued to rise.
The incident highlighted the ongoing divisiveness surrounding the tax reform bill, with members of the House continuing to express strong disagreement over the proposed legislation.
