Nigerian singer Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as May D, has claimed he once shared the spotlight with music heavyweights Wizkid and Davido.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a recent episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, May D asserted that he, Wizkid, and Davido were the three biggest Nigerian artistes years ago, even suggesting he was ahead of them at one point.

He remarked, “Then it was Wizkid, David, and I. I was even like bigger. Wetin be ‘Holla at Your Boy’ compared to ‘Soundtrack?’”

May D, who rose to fame after signing with P-Square’s Square Records in 2011, believes his fallout with the label significantly derailed his career. He stated that his Grammy-winning colleague Wizkid might not have surpassed him if not for the setback with Square Records.

The singer also recounted his struggles during his time with P-Square, alleging poor living conditions and lack of financial autonomy. May D revealed that he didn’t have a proper room or even a bank account during his four years with the label.

“When Davido was running from his dad, he came to my room in P-Square’s house. He said, ‘May D, is this where you stay? I can’t sleep here.’ If I had a proper room, it would have been cooler,” he shared.

He added, “For the four years I was with P-Square, I didn’t have a bank account. It’s only when someone has money that they open an account.”

May D further alleged that P-Square sabotaged his chances of signing with Akon’s Konvict Music. He claimed that during a trip to the U.S. for the Chop My Money Remix video shoot, Akon expressed interest in signing him. However, he alleged that P-Square intervened and blocked the opportunity.

In August 2012, it was officially announced that May D had parted ways with Square Records. Despite the challenges, May D’s music remains a nostalgic highlight for many fans of Nigerian Afrobeats.
