Ibadan Blast Shakes Legal Luminary Niyi Akintola SAN’s Hotel Business

The once-posh “House 40” hotel on Dejo Oyelese Street stands in ruins, bearing the scars of a tragic incident that unfolded the previous night.

Mr. Akintola shares the grievous loss of his modest contributions to the hospitality industry in Ibadaland. The once-beacon of luxury, “House 40,” housed 24 beds, including 8 suites, 3 chalets, and 13 standard rooms. Among those who had experienced the hospitality were esteemed colleagues like Alariwo, Wole Iyamu SAN, and H.E. Iyiola Oladokun, whose residence shared a fence with the now-destroyed hotel.
The devastation extends beyond Mr. Akintola’s property, reaching other legal luminaries and public figures on Dejo Oyelese Street. Late Chief Bola Ige SAN, the late Chief Bandele Aiku SAN, and a hospitality building reportedly owned by the late Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, also suffered substantial damage.
Expressing gratitude that no casualties were recorded, Mr. Akintola underscores the urgent need for prayers amidst the challenging start to the new year. The legal luminary discloses that some guests and three hotel staff are receiving treatment in the hospital.
Amidst the anguish, Mr. Akintola calls for collective efforts towards restructuring the country, emphasizing the necessity for devolving powers concerning solid minerals. He advocates for state governments to oversee the issuance of licenses for importing explosives, especially considering the rampant importation by foreign entities. In a plea to the Federal Government, he proposes the relinquishment of control over solid minerals, citing the complexity and vastness of the sector.
