A former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 elections, Charles Udeogaranya, has stated that former military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s recent remarks on the January 1966 coup will ultimately clear the path for a South-East president in 2027.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, Udeogaranya welcomed Babangida’s clarification, describing it as a crucial step towards addressing historical distortions that have marginalized the Igbo people in Nigeria’s leadership.
His reaction comes amid fresh calls from the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, which recently demanded an apology from the Federal Government over what it described as decades of humiliation and exclusion of the South-East from Nigeria’s political structure.
Speaking at the launch of his book, A Journey in Service, Babangida emphasized that the 1966 coup should not be viewed as an Igbo-led operation—a narrative that has often been cited as a reason for the South-East’s continued exclusion from the presidency.
Udeogaranya, a staunch Zikist, insisted that justice demands that the presidency be zoned to the South-East in 2027.
“These fabricated lies against the Igbo people were deliberately designed to deny Ndigbo their rightful place in Nigeria’s leadership,” he said. “This is the consequence of five decades without an Igbo president.”
According to him, Babangida’s revelation invalidates all past narratives that have worked against the South-East and paves the way for an Igbo presidency.

“I, therefore, urge the three leading political parties—APC, PDP, and Labour Party—to nominate Igbo candidates for the 2027 presidential election. This is essential for national healing and to refocus Nigeria on economic growth, rather than a continuous struggle for a share of the national cake,” he added.
