President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has credited former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), for shaping his political journey, stating that without Babangida’s influence, he might not have ventured into public service.
Speaking at the launch of IBB’s autobiography, A Journey in Service, in Abuja, Tinubu praised Babangida’s role in fostering young political leaders, which, he said, significantly influenced his own path.

“Without your influence, people like me would not be in politics. Your progressive vision in identifying and nurturing young talents has been an inspiration to many, including those gathered here today. This library project reflects the joy of visionary leadership. Thank you for being who you are,” Tinubu stated.
He also lauded Babangida’s economic policies, particularly the introduction of new-generation banks, which he credited with transforming Nigeria’s financial sector.
Recalling a pivotal moment in his early political career, Tinubu highlighted IBB’s decision to delay the inauguration of elected federal lawmakers 33 years ago.

“Although we had been elected, you postponed our inauguration and invited us to the International Conference Centre. I wasn’t expecting to speak, but I challenged your decision.
Some feared I would be jailed for my boldness, but instead, you told me that taking bold steps was essential. I have never forgotten the impact you’ve had on my journey,” he said.
Osinbajo: IBB’s Era Shaped Nigeria’s History
Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who reviewed the book, reflected on Babangida’s tenure, touching on key historical events such as:
The assassination of journalist Dele Giwa
The Gideon Orkar coup attempt
The Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), which led to economic hardship and protests in 1989
Osinbajo also noted that Babangida candidly addressed the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election in his memoir.
“He (IBB) presents the facts, explains his decisions, and acknowledges where he believes he made mistakes. A closer look at the election results confirms that M.K.O. Abiola won with 8,128,720 votes against Tofa’s 5,848,247, meeting both the majority and geographical spread requirements,” Osinbajo stated.
Akufo-Addo: Military Rule Prioritizes Security Over Democracy
Former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo provided a regional perspective, warning against the resurgence of military coups in Africa.
“It is disappointing to see military coups returning to our region. We must work harder to strengthen democratic structures and build public trust,” Akufo-Addo said.
Jonathan: Presidential Libraries Preserve History
Former President Goodluck Jonathan emphasized the importance of documenting governance experiences, urging Nigeria to institutionalize presidential libraries.
“Every president creates history, but not all document it. This library will serve as a valuable resource for future generations,” he remarked.
Dangote: IBB Transformed Nigeria’s Private Sector
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, praised IBB for abolishing import licenses in 1986, a move he credited with strengthening Nigeria’s private sector.
“You abolished import licenses, which allowed us to grow. I pledge ₦2 billion annually over the next four years—₦8 billion in total—to support the Babangida Presidential Library,” Dangote announced.
Abdulsalami: IBB’s Leadership Was Foretold
Former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar recalled a prophecy from 1952 predicting Babangida’s rise to power.
“A seer foretold that Ibrahim would one day lead Nigeria. At the time, we didn’t believe him, but by God’s mercy, we both eventually served as heads of state,” he said.
Gowon: The Military Should Have Prevented Coups
Former Head of State Yakubu Gowon expressed regret over the military’s failure to stop Nigeria’s coup culture but praised IBB for restoring his rank and honor after he was ousted from power.

“You reinstated my rank, and for that, I am grateful. I commend you for your contributions to Nigeria,” Gowon said.
Obasanjo: Criticism Is a Mark of Success
Chairman of the event, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, encouraged Babangida to ignore critics.
“Do not dwell on criticisms. Often, they indicate success. Stay focused and maintain your friendly disposition,” Obasanjo advised.
