The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) Plc has raised the alarm over fake text messages being circulated to customers, falsely claiming that electricity bill refunds are available.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the company issued the warning on Wednesday after discovering that fraudsters were sending deceptive SMS messages across different mobile networks, disguising themselves as IBEDC to lure unsuspecting customers into clicking harmful links.

In a disclaimer released by its management, IBEDC said the scam messages often carry the sender identification “FROM: IBEDC” and claim that customers’ bills have been recalculated, prompting them to apply for refunds through suspicious websites.

The electricity distributor firmly denied any involvement in such messages, stressing that it is not conducting any refund programme through third-party platforms or external links.
According to the company, the website being circulated in the messages, identified as “www.infodhe.online,” has been flagged as a phishing platform designed to steal personal and financial information.
IBEDC emphasised that the messages did not originate from the company and are not connected to any of its official processes, platforms, or communication channels.
The management urged customers within its coverage areas to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with the fraudulent messages to prevent financial losses and identity theft.
Customers were strongly advised to delete such messages immediately and warned not to click any attached links or provide sensitive details such as bank information, ATM card numbers, BVN, OTPs, passwords, or other personal data to unknown persons claiming to represent the company.
IBEDC further clarified that all legitimate services, including electricity purchases, account-related issues, and authorised refunds, are handled strictly through its approved platforms such as iRecharge, recognised payment agents, and official IBEDC business offices.

The company encouraged members of the public to promptly report any suspicious messages, phone calls, or websites using IBEDC’s name to its customer care channels for swift action.
In concluding the statement, IBEDC warned that it would not be held responsible for any losses incurred by customers who engage with unauthorised or fraudulent platforms falsely presenting themselves as representatives of the company.
Customers seeking confirmation or clarification on IBEDC-related matters were advised to rely solely on the company’s official customer service lines and verified social media pages.
