Imo: Many Dead, Properties Destroyed As Flood Sweeps Through Community

The Imo State House of Assembly has called on the state government to take immediate action to address the severe flooding in the Works Layout area of Owerri, which has claimed one life and caused significant property damage.

During the plenary session, Deputy Minority Leader Clinton Amadi moved a motion urging the state to evacuate debris and sand clogging the burrow pit and tunnel that serve as drainage for the Works Layout.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Amadi explained that this action is necessary to prevent further casualties and alleviate the suffering of residents, particularly those living in Kurume Uche Street and the Standard Shoe area of Works Layout Estate, who have been severely affected by the recurring floods.

“I am deeply concerned and sympathetic to the plight of the residents in these flooded areas, who are facing hardship every time it rains,” Amadi said. “Their lives and properties are endangered with each rainfall, and immediate action is needed to avert further damage.”

Amadi also praised Governor Hope Uzodimma for constructing the Balloon Technology Tunnel, which initially provided relief by allowing floodwater to flow and be evacuated during the rainy season.

However, he noted that due to a lack of maintenance, the burrow pit has become filled with debris, and the tunnel is now blocked, resulting in extremely slow water flow and exacerbating the flooding issue this year.

The motion, co-sponsored by nine lawmakers and seconded by Engr. Bernard Ozoemelam, representing Ehime Mbano constituency, was put to a vote by Speaker Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe.

It was unanimously adopted by the House. The Clerk of the Assembly was subsequently directed to communicate the resolution to Governor Uzodimma for immediate implementation.

The lawmakers’ collective call reflects their commitment to ensuring that residents of the affected areas receive urgent relief and that further loss of life and property is prevented.
