India’s Tibetan Community Calls For Tibet Discussion At G20 Summit

Eko Hot Blog reports that more than a hundred Tibetan refugees gathered for a demonstration in New Delhi on Friday, insisting that the “occupation” of Tibet by China should be a topic of discussion during the upcoming two-day G20 summit in the city.

Global leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have started arriving in India’s capital for the summit. China’s President Xi Jinping will not attend the event and will instead be represented by Prime Minister Li Qiang.

“China has taken control of our homeland, which is why we want to convey the message that China cannot be trusted,” said Gonpo Dhundup, President of the Tibetan Youth Congress, the organization that orchestrated the protest, in an interview with Indian news agency ANI, in which Reuters has a minority stake.

“We are calling upon our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other world leaders to address the Tibet issue during the G20 summit,” he emphasized. China dispatched its troops to Tibet in 1950, describing it as a “peaceful liberation,” and has governed the remote, mountainous region ever since.

Despite allegations from rights groups and Tibetans of “cultural genocide” and strict controls on religion, language, education, and labor under Chinese rule, Beijing vehemently denies any violation of the human rights of the Tibetan people.

The peaceful protest on Thursday occurred just 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Pragati Maidan, the summit venue. ANI footage depicted demonstrators of various ages, from young children and students to the elderly, proudly displaying Tibetan flags and chanting slogans such as “we want freedom” and “Tibet belongs to Tibetans.”
