An inquest jury ruled on Tuesday that the helicopter crash that killed Leicester City football club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was an accident.

Srivaddhanaprabha, along with four others, died when the Thai billionaire’s personal helicopter crashed and exploded in flames shortly after taking off from the club’s King Power Stadium following a match in October 2018.

The inquest, held at Leicester City Hall, examined the deaths of Srivaddhanaprabha and the other victims: pilot Eric Swaffer, his partner Izabela Lechowicz, and passengers Nusara Suknamai and Kaveporn Punpare.

Senior coroner Catherine Mason directed the jury on Monday to accept the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report, which concluded that the crash was accidental.

Mark Jarvis, principal inspector at the AAIB, testified that a duplex bearing on the helicopter’s tail rotor, which helps maintain stability, became “seized and locked,” causing the crash.

He said the pilot had done everything possible to try to regain control, but the helicopter was out of control. “The only control the pilot had was over the rate of descent during extremely disorienting conditions,” Jarvis added. “He took quick action and did everything expected of him.”

The jury foreperson stated that the helicopter had all necessary airworthiness and maintenance certificates and that pilot Swaffer had taken appropriate actions to try to regain control.

The inquest revealed that the four victims died from smoke inhalation after the fire, while Lechowicz “likely died at the point of impact.”
