The celebration which kicked off with a fitness walk around the community terminated at the Oke-Oyinbo venue of the celebration where health talks and other activities took place.
The Epe Local Government Medical Officer of Health, Dr Nurein Ayeola during his address spoke about the significance of the celebration.
“The older person needs to be celebrated because of their sacrifices for their families while growing old, and they need extra care and monitoring so that their caregivers don’t maltreat them.
“I urge our awesome older people to always engage themselves in little or more exercise to reduce health challenges in their system,” he said.
Having given a summary of how he conceived the idea of establishing the facility, the Convener of the Thanni Oladunjoye Old People Care Center, Mr Tunde Thani, urged the older persons at the event to endeavour to visit the facility for medical checks at all times and also use their medications as and when due for rapid recovery.
“The compassion we have for our older persons has made it easy for us to celebrate you in collaboration with another noble organisation, Age Nigeria Foundation.
“We want the best for you, we don’t want you to suffer when you’re supposed to enjoy your hard labour and that is why we are doing all our best to bring on board like minds so that our Government can wake up to their responsibilities,” he said.
The Convener, during an interview with Ekohotblog, reiterated that the Thanni Oladunjoye Old People Care Centre is not a hospital as misconstrued by many but a non-governmental organisation with over one thousand beneficiaries of free consultation, sensitisation and free medications.
The older persons, it was gathered, received materials such as eyeglasses, and crutches while wheelchairs were given to the physically challenged old persons for their support system and health improvement.
