Female Iraq Activist, Dr. Riham Yaqoob, who led local anti-government protests was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Iraqi city of Basra on Wednesday, August 19,2020.
There have been continuous protests in Iraq’s Capital Baghdad, Basra, and other Southern cities due to the corruption of the Government, high rate of unemployment, dire public services, and external interference in the country.
Following the murder of Riham, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has dismissed Basra’s chief of police and other top security officials. He also vowed to “do everything necessary for the security forces to undertake their duties”. He Stated:
“Complicity with the killers and submitting to their threats is rejected and we will do everything necessary for the ministry of interior and security agencies to carry out the task of protecting the security of society from the threats of outlaws.”
