It Started Behind My Gas Station – Dr Alli-Balogun on Birth of Ile-Bintin Club
Dr. Olasupo Alli-Balogun, the founding leader of Ile-Bintin Club, revealed the reasons behind introducing the celebration of US Thanksgiving Day as part of the club’s agenda at the occasion of the club’s inaugural Thanksgiving Day celebration in Onikan, Lagos.
Ile-Bintin, interpreted as “small house,” was established in the early 80s by a group of people led by Dr. Olasupo Alli-Balogun.

It is a prestigious and international social club of friends and acquaintances with common values and interests to foster cooperation, togetherness, and brotherhood among its founding members.
In an interview with EkoHotBlog, Dr. Alli-Balogun mentioned that “It all started at a small house behind my gas station, just years after we all returned from overseas, where we indulged and practiced our respective careers. We all deliberated to have a platform, and that was how the genuine people who were my old-time friends built the club Ile-Bintin. I will not take all the credit.”
According to the club’s founder, the name Ile-Bintin captured the structural outlook of the location, which was the club members’ initial meeting point—a small house behind the founder’s gas station—where a club of friends came together via an understanding of mutually shared values of integrity, decency, intellectualism, and an affinity for culture.
The founder of Ile-Bintin, in attendance at the just-concluded Thanksgiving Gala Night held at Onikan on Thursday, November 28, couldn’t contain his excitement, looking back at how the club started compared to how it has grown to become one of the outstanding social clubs in Lagos.
He also commended the effort of the Thanksgiving Gala Night organizers, saying, “This is the best social club party I have ever attended.”
He said that the purpose of bringing the Thanksgiving Day celebration home to Nigeria is to celebrate the long years of friendship, togetherness, and good memories of the club’s early beginnings.
