Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on Nigerians to recommit themselves to unity, accountability and active citizenship as the country marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a Democracy Day message shared on his X handle on Friday, Sanwo-Olu described June 12 as a powerful symbol of the resilience, courage and determination of Nigerians who fought to preserve democratic governance.

According to him, the annual commemoration serves as a reminder that the freedoms Nigerians enjoy today were secured through sacrifice, perseverance and an unwavering belief in a better nation.
“June 12 serves as a reminder that freedom, justice, and the right of citizens to have their voices heard were secured through courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering belief in a better Nigeria,” the governor stated.
Sanwo-Olu paid tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola, widely regarded as the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, as well as his wife, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, and other pro-democracy activists who played key roles in the struggle for the restoration of democratic rule.
“Today, we honour Chief MKO Abiola, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, and all those whose sacrifices helped shape the democratic nation we proudly call home,” he said.
Reflecting on the country’s democratic journey, the governor stressed the need for Nigerians to continue embracing values that strengthen democracy and national development.
“As we mark 27 years of democratic governance, we must continue to uphold the values that bind us together , respect for one another, active citizenship, accountability, and a shared commitment to progress,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu also highlighted the importance of unity in Lagos State, noting that the state’s cultural and ethnic diversity remains one of its greatest strengths.
He urged residents to continue working together in peace and mutual respect while creating opportunities for everyone to contribute meaningfully to society.
“In Lagos State, our diversity remains one of our greatest strengths. Let us continue to work together in unity and mutual respect, building a society where every citizen has the opportunity to contribute and thrive,” the governor said.
