‘Just hang your Boots’: Ex-Liverpool Star Urges Cristiano Ronaldo To Retire

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has expressed the view that Cristiano Ronaldo should consider retiring from football at the conclusion of this season.

Ronaldo, currently playing for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, continues to showcase his elite talent despite nearing his 40th birthday.

The Portuguese icon, now 39, recently reached a remarkable milestone, scoring his 901st career goal with a decisive strike for Portugal in their victory over Scotland during the international break.

The seasoned forward has also made an impressive start to the 2024-25 campaign, netting four goals and providing two assists in just four appearances for Al Nassr.

As Ronaldo’s contract is set to expire next June, Lawrenson believes the timing would be ideal for the legendary player to consider ending his illustrious career.

The 67-year-old told Paddy Power via GOAL,

“Cristiano Ronaldo is still scoring in Saudi Arabia, but would he sign a new contract there? I’m not sure.

“This is when I think he needs a best mate who says, ‘You’ve had an unbelievable run, and maybe at the end of this season, just hang your boots up and let people remember you for what you’ve done.’”

“He doesn’t want to go through half a season where he scores something like six goals in the Saudi league.”
