Eko Hot Blog reports that the Nigerian Senate has resumed the screening of the former Minister of State for Labour, Festus Keyamo, after he tendered an apology to the lawmakers.
This online medium had reported how Darlington Nwokocha, senator representing Abia Central, moved the motion to suspend Keyamo’s ministerial screening after he appeared before the senate’s committee of the whole for screening earlier on Monday.
Nwokocha said Keyamo ignored the summon of the national assembly over the employment scheme of 774,000 Nigerians recruited for the special public works programme.
“I move that we suspend forthwith screening of the nomination and wait until when this is cleared,” he said.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South, supported Nwokocha’s motion to step down Keyamo’s screening.
When Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the motion to a voice vote, the ‘nays’ were as loud as the ‘ayes’ after which a rancorous session ensued.
Thereafter, Akpabio called for an executive session.
At the resumed session, Keyamo told senators that he apologised for ignoring the summons of the committee earlier, adding that the apology is without reservation.
Keyamo stated that the disbursement of the N52 billion was supervised by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) while the payment was made to all intended beneficiaries.
The former minister stated that he didn’t get a dime from the money.
Chief Whip of the senate, Ali Ndume, said the senate president should put a question forward to the senators whether the Senate has accepted the apology or not.
Ndume moved a motion that the senate accept the apology, asking Keyamo to conduct himself properly in the future.
