Barely six weeks after a gas leakage incident disrupted academic activities in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, another suspected gas emission has affected more than 100 students and teachers in the area.

The development comes after a similar incident on April 1, 2026, at Our Lady of Apostle Primary and Secondary Schools (OLAS), where over 30 students and two teachers were hospitalised following exposure to suspected gas emissions.
Following the earlier incident, Governor Dapo Abiodun ordered the immediate closure of the affected school and directed relevant agencies to investigate the cause of the leakage to prevent a recurrence.
A situation room was also opened at the State General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, where free medical treatment was provided for affected residents and students from surrounding communities, including Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto and Oke-Aje market.
However, in the latest incident, videos circulating on social media showed students running out of school premises in panic, while teachers and residents assisted those who reportedly fainted into vehicles for urgent medical attention.
Affected victims were reportedly taken to the Ogun State General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, and other private medical facilities within the town for treatment.
Confirming the development, Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, disclosed that air quality monitoring devices installed in the area detected elevated methane gas concentrations.
According to him, the Air Quality Monitoring Device located at Ijebu Ode Grammar School recorded methane levels of about 13,500 parts per million (ppm) in surrounding areas.

Oresanya explained that the monitoring system was part of the state government’s environmental surveillance programme aimed at detecting unusual air quality conditions and supporting early emergency response.
He added that the state government had activated a multi-agency environmental and public health assessment team involving environmental regulators, emergency responders and air quality experts to determine the source of the emissions and assess associated risks.
The commissioner noted that further investigations would also focus on detecting the presence of hydrogen sulphide, volatile organic compounds and other hazardous gases within the affected environment.
He urged residents to remain calm but advised them to avoid naked flames or ignition sources in areas where unusual gas odours are perceived.
Oresanya also appealed to residents experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea or breathing difficulties to immediately seek medical attention at nearby health facilities.
He reassured residents that the Ogun State Government remains committed to protecting lives, public health and the environment, adding that further updates would be communicated as investigations continue.
