The Nigerian Railway Corporation has recorded a significant increase in rail-based cargo evacuation at Lagos seaports, moving 176,820 tonnes of freight through 198 trips during the first quarter of 2026.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Figures contained in the corporation’s operational report showed that the freight activities were mainly driven by cargo operations linked to APM Terminals and ENL Consortium at Apapa Port.

According to the report, APM Terminals accounted for the largest share of the cargo movement with 129,240 tonnes, while ENL terminals handled 47,580 tonnes within the three-month period.
The rail corporation disclosed that it carried out 198 freight operations comprising 122 standard gauge services connected to APM Terminals, six narrow gauge operations and 70 freight movements linked to ENL terminals.
Breakdown of the report showed that APM Terminals recorded 38 freight services in January, 34 in February and 50 in March, making March the busiest month within the quarter.
In terms of volume, the terminal handled 34,920 tonnes in January, 34,840 tonnes in February and 55,640 tonnes in March, amounting to 125,400 tonnes under the standard gauge system.
An additional 3,840 tonnes were moved through narrow gauge services, bringing the total cargo volume linked to APM Terminals to 129,240 tonnes.
The report also identified Eromma as one of the top users of the rail freight corridor after recording 32 freight trips and transporting 28,280 tonnes of cargo during the period under review.
Other major operators included APM Terminals with 24,000 tonnes, CCECC Track Access with 20,600 tonnes, Depotter with 14,680 tonnes, Ajuba Containers with 13,640 tonnes and Starlink with 9,120 tonnes moved through rail services.
Meanwhile, ENL terminals recorded 70 standard gauge freight operations and evacuated 47,580 tonnes of cargo between January and March.

The terminal moved 16,500 tonnes in January, while February and March recorded 15,780 tonnes and 15,300 tonnes respectively.
The report further showed that PS Gypsum dominated cargo movement through ENL terminals with 54 freight trips and 28,440 tonnes transported, while Bueno Gypsum handled 16 freight services and 19,140 tonnes during the quarter.
The NRC noted that the growing volume of cargo moved by rail reflects increasing confidence in rail transportation as a reliable alternative for port cargo evacuation.
Stakeholders in the maritime sector have continued to advocate for improved multimodal transportation systems to reduce pressure on roads, lower logistics costs and address persistent congestion around the ports.
