Eko Hot Blog reports that President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of DCG Kemi Nanna Nandap to serve as the Comptroller-General (CG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
The president’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, made the disclosure in a statement on Wednesday.
He said the appointment is effective from March 1, 2024.
DCG Nandap will take over from Mrs. Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju, the incumbent CG, whose term in office expires on February 29, 2024.
Before her appointment as Comptroller-General, Nandap was the Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of the Migration Directorate of the Service.
“The President anticipates that the new Comptroller-General will deepen the ongoing reforms in the service and create a robust mechanism for efficient and dedicated service delivery to Nigerians, as well as strengthen the nation’s security through proactive and effective border security and migration management,” Ngelale said.
The departing CG was confirmed by the Senate in November 2023 despite protests by the civil society.
The Coalition of Civil Society for Rule of Law and Justice, representing 15 civil society organizations in Nigeria, demanded Adepoju’s resignation, citing violation of civil service rules.
The coalition argued that the six-month extension of her tenure was both illegal and unlawful.
“The Acting Comptroller General Immigration retired officially from the immigration service on the 31st of May 2023. The Immigration Act does not allow for retired personnel or those not in active service to head the agency,” said Nwogu Ndubisi, Convener of the Coalition, at a press conference in Abuja, in August 2023.
“Any extension is like extending the retirement age of someone in service, which is not possible unless the public service rule is changed.”
