Kenya’s Edwin Kibet, Nigeria’s Felicia Adetutu, Others Win Big At 2023 Lagos City Marathon

The Lagos City Marathon is an annual event and the 2023 race is the 8th edition.

The world athletics body recently upgraded the event to a gold label; less than eight years after its maiden edition.

There were no surprises on Saturday as Kenyans and Ethiopians dominated as in past years.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Edwin Kibet Koech of Kenya won the men’s race of the 8th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.

Kibet beat about 300 marathoners on Saturday morning to win the 42km race.
The first-place finish won the Kenyan the grand prize of $50,000.
The 39-year-old finished at 2 hours, 14 minutes and six seconds to best Dekeba Shefa of Ethiopia and Kenya’s Bernard Sang who finished second and third respectively.
Shefa and Sang went home with $40,000 and $30,000 respectively.
Meanwhile, Alemenseh Guta of Ethiopia won the women’s race, crossing the finish line ahead of Kebene Urisa in second place and Kenya’s Naomi Maiyo in third place.
The winners of both the men and women’s races qualified for the marathon event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Notably, Nigeria’s Felicia Adetutu finished 10th in the women’s race, making history as the first Nigerian woman to cross the finish line.
Her exploits earned her $2000 and N3 million respectively for both finishes.
The 42km race began at the National Stadium in Surulere and ended at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island.
