The festival, which unfolded in a kaleidoscope of colours and traditions, held on Wednesday April 17, 2024, and Thursday April 18, 2024.

The event marked the commemoration of the historic milestone of freedom from slavery in these communities.

The festival also serves as a vibrant testament to the enduring cultural heritage of Epe.

The focal point of the festivities was the revered Kilajolu masquerade, whose ceremonial journey commenced with a solemn visit to the hallowed halls of the Oloja of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Ishola Animashaun.

Seeking the monarch’s blessings, the masquerade embarked on its symbolic pilgrimage, weaving through the labyrinthine streets of the community.

Amidst a backdrop of traditional drumming and chants, the masquerade paused at significant households, where ancestral prayers were offered, invoking blessings for prosperity and unity.

The journey, steeped in symbolism and reverence, culminated in a customary stop at the local police station, underscoring the deep-rooted connection between tradition and community.

Following the observance of age-old rites and rituals, the festival transformed into a jubilant spectacle, as residents converged at the grand stage to partake in the revelry.

From pulsating rhythms to soulful melodies, a lineup of esteemed musicians took center stage, enrapturing audiences with their impassioned performances.

In addition to the musical extravaganza, the Kilajolu festival served as a platform for cultural exchange and education, with artisans showcasing traditional crafts and delicacies, and elders imparting wisdom to the younger generation about the significance of preserving heritage.

As dusk descended upon Epe, the echoes of celebration lingered in the air, a testament to the resilience and spirit of a community united in remembrance and triumph.
