  • Five people have died, and 80,000 residents have evacuated due to the fires.
  • Firefighters face challenges from hurricane-force winds, with zero containment reported.

The most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles history continue to wreak havoc, claiming five lives, destroying over 1,000 structures, and scorching more than 27,000 acres.

Tens of thousands have been forced to flee as firefighters struggle to contain the blazes amid fierce winds and dry conditions.

Three major fires – the Palisades, Eaton, and Sunset fires – are overwhelming firefighting efforts.

The Palisades Fire, spanning 17,234 acres with zero containment, remains the largest.

CalFire reported “extreme fire behavior,” with wind gusts of up to 60 mph exacerbating the flames.

The Eaton Fire has burned 10,600 acres, while the smaller Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills was contained after consuming 40 acres.

Evacuation orders are in place for Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Santa Monica, and Topanga Canyon.

Thousands of residents face uncertainty as their homes and livelihoods hang in the balance. In addition, wildfires in Sylmar and Acton north of Los Angeles added to the crisis.

The fires have prompted widespread disruptions.

Major road closures include parts of Pacific Coast Highway, Santa Monica Freeway, and Topanga Canyon Boulevard.

Tens of thousands are without power, and a Red Flag warning remains in effect until Friday afternoon.

“We’re just at the beginning stages,” said LAFD Capt. Adam Vangerpen.

“Once the fires are out, we’ll move into the recovery phase, but right now, containment is at zero percent.”

President Joe Biden has approved a federal disaster declaration for California, enabling access to emergency resources.
