The National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure, faces accusations from the suspended National Treasurer, Oluchi Opara, who asserted a N3.5 billion fraud related to the sale of nomination forms and fundraising activities for the 2023 elections.
Obi, addressing the situation, emphasized the need for transparency within the party and proposed the appointment of a reputable audit firm to thoroughly examine the financial records.
He disclosed his advice to the party’s National Working Committee during a meeting, underlining his commitment to resolving the matter and ensuring accountability.
“I was at the meeting where she (Opara) mentioned it, and I have directed them and appealed to them to go and resolve it. But today, it is in the public domain, and we owe the public a duty to be transparent.” Peter Obi said.
Abure, denying any wrongdoing, challenged Opara to present concrete evidence to substantiate the N3.5 billion fraud claim.
“I have never stopped Oluchi Oparah from carrying out her duties, including receiving money and signing cheques. The electronic payment funds meant for the party are automatically transferred.”
During an appearance on Arise TV, Abure urged various support groups and individuals within the party who received funds to cooperate with the ongoing efforts to investigate and bring transparency.
“I am also using this opportunity to appeal to various support groups and individuals in the party that received funds on behalf of the party to support what we are doing to turn them in.”
In light of the allegations and counter-allegations, Obi appealed to all concerned parties to support the audit process, urging individuals and groups to transparently account for any funds they received on behalf of the party.
“When I am involved anywhere money is, it must be transparent. All these allegations and counter-allegations must be thoroughly investigated, and we will reconcile it.” Peter Obi
