EKO HOT BLOG reports that the high-level session drew key political figures, including Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, his deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, and senior party stakeholders from across the country. Central to the agenda was the formal inauguration of an interim National Working Committee (NWC) to steer the party’s affairs in the short term, pending the election of a new leadership through a national convention.
According to party insiders, the interim NWC is expected to play a stabilising role and serve as the backbone of LP’s organisational restructuring. The committee will also guide the implementation of key reforms designed to strengthen the party’s base and prepare it for the next electoral cycle.
The NEC also resolved to establish several strategic committees, including a membership revalidation committee that will undertake a comprehensive nationwide update of the party’s register. In addition, a separate congress committee will be set up to coordinate ward, local government, and state congresses, which are expected to reenergise the party’s grassroots presence.
A source within the party told Daily Post that the moves are aimed at repositioning the Labour Party for “a stronger political showing in 2027,” particularly in light of recent internal challenges.
Also in attendance at Tuesday’s meeting was Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), whose presence reaffirmed labour’s ongoing interest in the party’s direction.
Although Chief Sylvester Ejiofor, Chairman of the LP Board of Trustees (BoT), was absent, he was represented at the gathering.

The NEC meeting comes after months of internal disputes that shook the party’s leadership and structure, making Tuesday’s development a critical step towards unity and renewal.
