Lagos 2027: Obasa, Seyi Tinubu, Ambode, Jandor, Others Eye Sanwo-Olu’s Seat

With 30 months remaining in his term, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State remains in office, but the political scene is already heating up for the 2027 gubernatorial race.

In the All Progressives Congress (APC), several heavyweights are positioning themselves for the leadership of Lagos. Rumored aspirants include Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu; Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Obasa; former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode; and Senator Tokunbo Abiru.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the final candidate will likely be influenced by factors such as religion, zoning, and endorsements from influential stakeholders like the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) and President Tinubu.

Seyi Tinubu has garnered endorsements from various groups, while Speaker Obasa highlights his legislative experience. Some members advocate for Ambode’s return to balance the religious leadership cycle, as the state has had Christian governors for 12 consecutive years by 2027.

On the opposition front, figures like Abdulaziz Olajide Adediran (Jandor) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (LP) are preparing for another shot at the governorship.

Both made significant impacts during the 2023 elections and are realigning with their party structures for a stronger push in 2027.

Jandor continues to rally support through his Lagos4Lagos movement, while Rhodes-Vivour enjoys popularity among the state’s younger electorate.

Religion is a key factor in this race, with some advocating for a Muslim candidate to break the 12-year Christian leadership cycle, while others seek continuity with a Christian governor, mirroring the tenure of Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s path to re-election in 2023 faced early challenges, with rumored alternative candidates like Femi Gbajabiamila and Hakeem Muri-Okunola. However, public endorsements and widespread support within the APC solidified his position for a second term.

Hon. Obasa, the longest-serving Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is also positioning himself as a potential candidate. He has not ruled out the possibility of running for governor, emphasizing his experience and commitment to strengthening the APC.

As the race heats up, the APC’s choice of candidate will likely be influenced by internal dynamics, religious considerations, and key endorsements. For the opposition, unity and strategic alliances will be crucial in challenging the APC’s dominance in Lagos politics.
