- Says Obi’s remarks could be perceived as politicising sensitive security issues
The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State, has criticised 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi over his remarks on the conviction of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Obi had described Kanu’s arrest, detention, and sentencing as unfortunate, warning that the process reflected leadership gaps and could heighten tensions rather than reduce them.

The comments were issued in a statement titled “Kanu’s Conviction: Obi Calls for Dialogue, Healing Over Hostility,” released by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar.
Reacting on Sunday, Lagos APC spokesman Seye Oladejo described Obi’s position as inappropriate, stressing that political actors should avoid commenting on matters still under judicial review.

Oladejo cautioned that Obi’s remarks could be perceived as politicising sensitive security issues and urged public figures to refrain from statements capable of inflaming public sentiment.
He added that consistent and balanced engagement is essential when addressing national security matters and public order, noting that all parties must respect judicial outcomes while allowing lawful avenues for appeal and dialogue.
“National security matters should not be influenced by political considerations. Leaders must prioritise unity and stability in their public communication,” Oladejo said.
The statement further emphasised that the Federal Government remains committed to handling issues related to terrorism, treason, and national stability in accordance with the law and the constitution.
“We urge Nigerians to view Obi’s statement within the broader context of ongoing political discourse and encourage restraint, stressing the importance of responsible public commentary on issues of national importance,” it concluded.
