The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, was expected to step down after returning to office as part of an agreement to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis in the House. However, fresh allegations suggest he has reneged on the deal, leading to heightened tensions.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that a source told SaharaReporters that Obasa initially agreed to resign after the emergence of Mojisola Meranda as Speaker but later backtracked. “Many Assembly members were deceived into believing Obasa would step down, only to realize it was a political gimmick,” the source said.
Once re-elected, Obasa allegedly adjourned the House indefinitely, awaiting the outcome of a court case challenging his removal.
Further allegations suggest that Obasa is attempting to influence the judiciary to secure a favorable ruling. A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, which had adjourned proceedings on March 7, is set to rule on the case on March 10, 2025.
The source claimed, “Despite assurances that the case would be withdrawn, it is still ongoing. They have allegedly pre-arranged a judgment invalidating his removal, with efforts in place to pressure the presiding judge.”
If the court reinstates Obasa, sources say he will prevent any appeal from being filed on behalf of the Assembly, effectively solidifying his return to power.
“The judgment, no matter how legally flawed, will be final because Obasa will ensure no appeal is made while Meranda is already out of the way. This will make it appear as though he was never removed,” the source alleged.

Additionally, the dismissed Clerk of the Assembly is expected to be reinstated, despite strong opposition from Assembly members who backed his removal. The unfolding crisis continues to generate uncertainty over the stability of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
