This decision was announced during a safety workshop themed “Establishing a Safety Culture in the Night Life Sector in Lagos State,” organized by the two agencies for owners and operators of nightlife establishments in the hospitality sector.
Addressing the participants, Mr. Lanre Mojola, the Director-General of the Safety Commission, emphasized the importance of adhering to rules and regulations in line with international best practices.
He stated, “There is no doubt, Lagos State will enforce indoor smoking at nightclubs, bars, and lounges because it is high time we do our business as the law stipulates rather than as we want it to be done.”
Mojola further stressed the need for designated smoking areas within hotels, asserting that public spaces where people gather to relax and enjoy themselves should remain smoke-free.
“This is especially required in Lagos State where the safety and health of all the citizens is of utmost concern to the Sanwo-Olu-led administration,” he added.
Dr. Tunde Ajayi, the General Manager of LASEPA, echoed Mojola’s sentiments, affirming that the enforcement of indoor smoking regulations in nightclubs, bars, and lounges would commence in earnest.
He acknowledged that some elements within the hospitality business might not comply with safety rules, as is the case in other regions, but emphasized that relevant agencies would impose strict sanctions to address such non-compliance.
Ajayi emphasized the importance of forums like the safety workshop in providing proper information and education on conducting hospitality business in a customer-friendly and safety-conscious manner.
Other speakers at the event, including Mr. Ehi Iden, an Occupational Health and Safety Manager, Mr. Yomi Ayoola, a Hospitality Consultant at Expose Brands, and a representative from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Bashir Oladosu, highlighted the need for quality service delivery, investment in training and capacity building for industry personnel, and constant monitoring to ensure compliance with global best practices.
