Lagos Orders Evacuation, Demolition Of 15 Distressed Buildings

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has identified over 15 distressed buildings in Iponri Estate, Surulere, set for demolition.

Occupants of these buildings have been given a two-week notice to evacuate to prevent potential loss of lives and property.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that LASBCA General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, stated on Sunday that the agency had repeatedly warned residents to vacate the compromised buildings, stressing that their structural integrity had been severely compromised.

“Evacuation is in the best interest of public safety,” Oki emphasized, warning that the deteriorating state of these buildings posed an immediate danger of collapse.

He further explained that swift action by the state government was necessary to prevent disasters associated with building collapses and reiterated LASBCA’s commitment to enforcing safety standards across Lagos.

Surulere Constituency 1 House of Assembly representative, Desmond Elliot, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barakat Bakare, urged residents to adhere to building codes and safety regulations.

Elliot also praised LASBCA’s efforts to ensure public safety and called on residents to comply with evacuation orders.

Lagos Demolition Distressed Buildings

The recent collapse of a two-storey building on Amusu Street, Orile Iganmu, was cited as a stark reminder of the risks posed by aging and structurally compromised buildings.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Damilola Oke-Osanyitolu, confirmed that the collapse, which occurred last Monday morning, was due to the building’s age.

LASBCA assures the public that it will continue monitoring buildings across the state to identify and address similar risks.
