Lagos State has emerged overall winner at the 2025 edition of the Basic Education School Sports (BESS) Competition, held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex.
Ekohotblog reports that the event brought together pupils from all six South-West states,Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, and Oyo, for a week of vibrant sporting activities that promoted teamwork, discipline, and youth development.

The grand finale, held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, concluded a series of competitive events in track and field, football, and board games. Lagos State secured the top position with 19 medals, comprising 9 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze.
Ondo State followed closely with an equal number of medals but fell short on the gold count, earning 7 gold, 7 silver, and 5 bronze. Ekiti State took third place with a total of 16 medals, including 5 gold.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, a top official of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) praised the pupils for their passion, talent, and commitment throughout the competition.
“This is not just a contest of strength or speed,” the official said. “It is a platform to instill in our children values such as perseverance, discipline, leadership, and healthy competition.”
Organized by LASUBEB in partnership with UBEC and the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF), the BESS tournament serves as a key initiative for talent discovery and social integration among pupils in public primary and junior secondary schools.
The week-long event kicked off with preliminaries at CMS Grammar School, Bariga, and Agege Stadium before culminating in the grand finale at YABATECH.
Over 370 pupils participated in the various events, all of whom demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and determination.
Government officials reiterated the importance of sports in education, describing it as a critical component of holistic child development.

“Sports are not extracurricular in Lagos; they are an integral part of our curriculum. We believe in raising children who are sound in mind and body,” one official remarked.
Organizers confirmed that future editions of the BESS competition may include pupils from private schools to widen participation and foster even greater unity among learners in the region.
