The highly regarded continental forum, which convened more than 35,000 professionals, government agencies and industry authorities, celebrated trailblazers in health, safety, technology and emergency management under the theme “United for a Safer Africa: Building Strategic Alliances and Leveraging Technology for Sustainable Development.”
Giwa received the award for his outstanding leadership in strengthening Lagos State’s emergency response systems, advancing public safety coordination and modernising disaster management structures.

Chief Executive Officer of AfriSAFE, Femi Da-Silva, described Giwa’s achievements as a reflection of Lagos State’s status as one of Africa’s best-coordinated urban safety hubs. He noted that Giwa remains one of only four Certified Emergency Managers in Africa under the International Association of Emergency Managers.
Reacting to the honour, Giwa credited Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s visionary leadership for providing the policy direction, resources, and technological upgrades that enabled Lagos to transform its emergency management landscape.
He said the Governor’s commitment has driven major milestones, including improved inter-agency collaboration, strengthened governance mechanisms, public sensitisation on emergency lines 767/112 and significant infrastructural enhancements at the Command and Control Centre.
He added that the Centre has evolved into a modern, technology-driven command hub for real-time monitoring and coordinated responses, a development that reinforces Lagos’ position as a continental leader in emergency management.
The AfriSAFE Award further cements Lagos State’s growing list of recognitions for its innovative, technology-focused approach to public safety and its progress toward becoming a resilient, smart city.
