In an interview with Eko Hot Blog, Khairat Animashuan Ajiboye, one of the key organizers of the recent Lagos State Diaspora Stakeholders Meeting in Atlanta, provided insights into LASDA’s mandate and objectives.
“This meeting is geared towards the full support of the new mandate in the creation of the Lagos State Office of Diaspora Affairs (LASDA) by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on January 30th, 2024,” Khairat stated. “This I can confidently tell you is the missing link that Lagos State needs to advance her leadership in all areas of human, physical, and infrastructural development.”
According to Khairat, the primary goal of the Atlanta meeting, the first of its kind in the USA diaspora, was to coordinate efforts, connect with foreign representatives, businesses, and partnerships with diverse intellectual and professional capacities to foster the goals of the Lagos State Government.
Explaining the strategies employed during the gathering, Khairat said, “The program actually started on Monday, March 4th, at the Georgia State Capitol in Downtown Atlanta, where the Head of Lagos State Diaspora Affairs (LASDA), Mr. Jermaine Sanwo-Olu, and Eko Club Atlanta were recognized at the gallery by the Honorable Representative of the State of Georgia Assembly led by Hon. Segun Adeyina of House District 110.”
She added, “Visitations of businesses and conversations with other stakeholders were held by Mr. Sanwo-Olu and the team in preparation for this meeting. The meeting is to crystallize today, March 7th, at the Atlanta Metropolitan State College. These conversations will gather suggestions and ideas by the diaspora on how to achieve the goals of LASDA.”
Emphasizing the importance of diaspora engagement, Khairat stated, “It is very crucial and paramount for these coordinated efforts in order to more effectively channel a diaspora voice in such a way that diasporans will not miss home and will be contented with contributing towards the development of their states.”
She highlighted the key motivations, saying, “Organizations such as Eko Club Atlanta and other states with Lagosians and interests in Lagos can be motivated when they know that their collective professionalism and skills sets are well received, valued, and recognized. The motivation is the feeling of a safe, clean, and productive communities here in Georgia and back in the motherland, Lagos, Nigeria, where processes and procedures are met with discipline and positive endearing achievements for the people.”
