EKO HOT BLOG reports that the decision, according to the statement, affirms that the regulation of lotteries and gaming is a residual matter and falls squarely within the purview of state governments.
The Supreme Court, on Friday, ruled to invalidate the National Lottery Act of 2005, which had been enacted by the National Assembly. This judgment, the Lagos government stated, reinforces the principles of true federalism and empowers states to effectively regulate gaming and lottery activities within their jurisdictions.
The statement also acknowledged the pivotal role of President Bola Tinubu in advocating for true federalism, noting that this victory aligns with his vision for restructuring and empowering states. It further credited the success to his predecessor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, who had shown courage in pursuing the legal challenge, which ultimately led to the landmark judgment.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s steadfast leadership in upholding the rule of law and protecting the interests of Lagosians was also praised. The statement emphasized that this legal victory would not have been possible without Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to integrity and good governance.

The Lagos State Government also reaffirmed that the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) remains the sole regulatory body for gaming and lotteries in the state. The government encouraged all illegal or unlicensed gaming operators to regularize their operations with the LSLGA or face prosecution. It reiterated its commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment for licensed operators while ensuring the sector contributes to the state’s economic growth and protects its residents from the harms of unregulated gaming.
Lagos, the statement concluded, will continue to ensure that gaming activities are conducted responsibly and transparently in line with international best practices.
