Lagos State Police Commissioner Olanrewaju Ishola has declared that the #EndSARS memorial protest marking the fourth anniversary of the movement is illegal and will not proceed.

Demonstrators gathered at the Lekki toll gate on Sunday to remember those who lost their lives during the shooting incident at the same location in October 2020.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in an interview with Channels Television, Ishola stated that the protesters failed to seek the necessary clearance and permission before initiating the demonstration. While he acknowledged the constitutional rights of citizens, he emphasized the importance of adhering to the laws of the land.

“The protesters should have formally notified me, as the Commissioner of Police, of their intentions to gather. However, they did not do so; therefore, any such gathering is illegal, and the police will not permit it,” Ishola explained.

He further noted that the police had deployed operatives to strategic locations throughout the state to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order.

“We have been monitoring key protest points since 12 a.m. and have taken control of traditional gathering areas to maintain peace,” he added.

Ishola reassured the public, saying, “We are not opposed to anyone exercising their fundamental rights, but the law of the land must take precedence. This is the essence of our presence here today.”

He also highlighted that there had been a total non-acceptance of any disruption across Lagos throughout the day.

Earlier, Ishola conducted a tour of several locations across Lagos, including Gana Park, Freedom Park, Ikeja Underbridge, and Alausa Mall, where he anticipated gatherings might occur.

“We have all areas covered, and security measures are in place throughout Lagos.

I assure the people that they will experience improved policing, and we are committed to ensuring that Lagos remains a functioning state free from disruptions to government activities,” he concluded.
