EKO HOT BLOG reports that he emphasized that while the police respect citizens’ right to protest, any act that leads to a breakdown of law and order will not be tolerated.
“We are not stopping anybody from protesting; it is your legitimate right. We will protect everyone to ensure miscreants do not hijack it,” the commissioner stated.
He assured residents of a strong police presence to maintain peace and order, stressing that protesters must respect others’ rights and avoid disrupting public peace. “Protesters should not trample on other people’s rights or disrupt public peace. We will not condone any lawlessness or violence,” he added.
The commissioner also noted that the police will enforce a court order restricting protests to the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, reiterating that no other locations in Lagos are authorized for demonstrations.
Dapo Amao, Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lagos, echoed similar sentiments, urging protesters to act within the law. He stressed the importance of preventing the protest from being hijacked by those intending to cause disorder. “We will collaborate with other security agencies to ensure lives and property are secured,” he said.
Adedotun Keshinro, Lagos State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), urged citizens to allow the government time to address their grievances, insisting that any protest must remain peaceful. He pledged the NSCDC’s cooperation with other agencies to protect lives and property during the protests.
