LASG Launches N500m ‘Ounje Eko’ Subsidy Program to Boost Food Security

In a move to bolster food security and domestic food production, the Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to launch a N500 million intervention fund called “Ounje Eko” – a farmers’ subsidy program aimed at providing affordable food sufficiency for its over 23 million residents.

Eko Hot Blog reports that in collaboration with the private sector and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector, the program seeks to ensure fair pricing of products for end-users while supporting local farmers.

The initiative was announced by the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms Abisola Olusanya, at a press conference in Alausa, Ikeja.

The Ounje Eko subsidy program will provide a 25% subsidy on animal feeds for poultry, crop, and fish farmers, as well as tractorization services for crop production and the distribution of bags of fertilizers.

By offering these much-needed resources at a reduced cost, the Lagos State Government aims to stimulate agricultural growth and improve the livelihoods of local farmers.

The launch of the Ounje Eko program is scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, 2025, marking a significant step towards enhancing food security and promoting sustainable agricultural practices within Lagos State.

Expanding on the significance of the Ounje Eko program, Commissioner Abisola Olusanya emphasized its objectives to sustain and enhance production levels, maintain a consistent supply of poultry and fish products in the market, and prevent farm closures that could exacerbate food insecurity in the state.
