EKO HOT BLOG reports that the International Foundation for Electoral Systems has partnered with the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to promote voter education in an effort to increase election turnout.
A strategic plan that makes voter education mandatory for citizens starting in childhood will have a significant impact on the electoral process in Nigeria, according to Dr. Olayiwole Onasanya, the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, who spoke at the Voter Education program’s opening ceremony in Lagos.
Onasanya stated, “I think one of our major objectives, and which is a strategic plan, is to increase voter awareness to ensure that people are registered, particularly those from the age of 18,” when explaining the need for primary school students to learn about voting despite not taking part in the process at their age.
The Permanent Secretary reminded everyone 18 years of age and older that the acronym RCV stands for Register, Collect your Voters’ Card and Vote and urged them to continue registering for their permanent voters’ cards as well as collecting the cards and casting their votes on election day.
According to him, the goal of the workshop was to review, strengthen, and identify strategies to successfully increase political engagement and voter awareness through civic/voter education.
