The Lagos State Government announced on Monday that it had impounded over 448 vehicles for violating Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane regulations between January and August 2024.

In a statement signed by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, revealed that the vehicles were apprehended in various locations, including Ikorodu, Maryland, Anthony, Apongbon, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ojuelegba, and Oyingbo.

Taofiq explained that the offenders have been charged to the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution. He also urged both private and commercial motorists to stop encroaching on the BRT lanes throughout the state, emphasising the Abule-Egba BRT corridor in particular.

“They are strongly advised to cease further infringements, as the Lagos State Public Works Corporation has recently completed extensive road rehabilitation from Abule-Egba to Iyana-Ipaja, especially near Super Ile-Epo and Katangura Market. The improved road conditions make it unnecessary and unjustifiable to use the BRT lanes unlawfully,” Taofiq stated.

The government reiterated that motorists traveling from Abule-Egba through Iyana-Ipaja, Dopemu, and Oshodi must adhere strictly to the designated lanes, warning that anyone violating the BRT lanes would face prosecution by the Lagos State Mobile Court.

The statement added, “While the Lagos State Government remains committed to providing top-tier infrastructure for the benefit of all residents, these efforts require the cooperation of road users. Motorists are urged to exercise discipline and patience to foster a safer and more efficient traffic environment.”

In 2018, the Lagos State Police Command and the state government, through LASTMA, began a partnership to arrest traffic offenders. The joint effort has led to the apprehension of over 42 vehicles, including two articulated trucks and commercial tricycles, for driving against traffic and using BRT lanes.
