Liverpool went on a run of winless games in the premier league since the turn of the new year, and it took the return leg of the Merseyside derby to reset the narratives and for the first time claim their first win of 2023 in the Premier League.
It all took quick and experienced counter attacking play from the Reds, with Darwin Nunez the pivotal player in breaking the deadlock with a quick move to get the ball forward to Mohamed Salah to lift the ball well past Everton goal keeper, Jordan Pickford.
Prior to that moment, the story well could have been different as a well taken corner by Nigerian International, Alex Iwobi almost forced a goal for the Toffees, with the ball doing all but go past the goal keeper, Alisson Becker and into the open goal.
It was from that break away that crafted the quick counter to split Everton’s defence at roughly 37 minutes of play.
The second half came as a repeat of the first, with Liverpool dominating the possession, leading in the attack, that it took just the right moment to hand new signing, Cody Gakpo his very first goal in Red.
It wasn’t a goal that will win the goal of the season no doubt, but it was a goal that sang a lot of songs echoed by another Dutch player in the team, Virgil van Dijk who was available for the Reds on the bench today.
Virgil van Dijk’s first goal for Liverpool came on his debut against Everton in the FA, but for Cody Gakpo, it wasn’t his debut game for Liverpool but his debut game for Liverpool against Everton, which was enough to ease the Reds into the game.
Spanish talent, Stefan Bajcetic deserves a mention in the derby, as he produced what could be seen as a Man of the Match winning performance in front of the Kop, and in his very debut in the Merseyside derby.
Bajcetic was very close to having an assist under his belt had Mohamed Salah not flunked a chance to net his second of the match.
