An Air India plane heading for London’s Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom has crashed near the airport in Ahmedabad.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Air India while confirming the crash in a statement on X, said 242 people were on board.

The plane fell on top of the dining area of BJ Medical college, killing at least five medical students and injuring nearly 50.
The statement released after the crash read, “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”
The crash reportedly occurred when the aircraft was taking off, as pictures and videos online show debris on fire, with thick black smoke rising into the sky near the airport.
A flight-tracking website, Flight Radar said the signal from the plane was lost seconds after take-off, adding that the flight was scheduled to fly from Ahmedabad International Airport at 09:50 local time to London Gatwick Airport at 18:25 local time.
According to reports, the signal was lost at 10:08 local time at 625 feet, less than a minute after take-off.
As of the time of filing this report, Reuters reports that the National Safety Board (NTSB) will be leading a team of U.S. investigators travelling to India to assist the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau with its investigation into the crash of an Air India Boeing 787 in Ahmedabad.
Air India said the passengers included 217 adults, 11 children and two infants – 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.
Meanwhile, 290 bodies have been recovered from the crash scene, the only survivor so far, Ramesh Viswashkumar, has spoken to Indian media, Hindustan Times.
The 40-year-old, while speaking from his hospital bed, said, “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise, and then the plane crashed.
“It all happened so quickly.
“When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me,” he said. “Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital.”

Viswashkumar said that his brother Ajay was seated in a different row on the plane.
“He was travelling with me and I can’t find him anymore. Please help me find him,” he said.
